Blue Blazon

“Color in a picture is like enthusiasm in life.” — Vincent van Gogh

After finishing this little watercolor painting I decided to call it Blue Blazon because of its expressive color and energetic vibes. Impressionistically, the brilliant blues and greens illuminate a blossoming tree reflected in the water near a rocky shoreline, while warm orange shadows add contrast, movement, and energy to the scene. The lively palette and flowing watercolor create a joyful atmosphere that brings warmth, passion, and vibrancy into any space.

Artist’s Thoughts

After the paint and paper dried on this little painting I called Blue Blazon, I couldn’t stop thinking about the vibrant blue colors and my first night at university.

“No One Told Us”

Wow! I was a senior and I got accepted into university. “How special is that,” I thought as I jumped for joy. Well not literally, but emotionally. I knew I was starting a new life journey.

Two weeks later, I flew 4000 miles across Canada fron Newfoundland to attend university in Victoria, BC. Once a military college, its campus brochure boasted of an Edwardian castle nestled in a National Historic Site with rose gardens, hiking trails, and Douglas Fir, Monkey Puzzle, and Arbutus trees.

Shortly after I arrived at the oceanfront campus, I registered and hastily unpacked a few things so I could explore the grounds where movies were made. What a beautiful surprise – free-roaming peacocks walking around campus showing off their iridescent blue and green plumage and magnificent tall flowing tails.

After a long day of travel, I settled in for the night. Around 2 a.m., I was startled by loud squawking sounds. I ran to the window, but there was nothing in sight. The next morning, the first day of class was abuzz with conversations about sleepless nights and strange noises. Mystery solved — it was peacock mating season. Thankfully, it only lasted about a week and we finally got some well-deserved rest.

The brilliant blues and greens within this painting still fill me with enthusiasm and energy, reminding me of that special and unforgettable time at university.
