Artist’s Thoughts
Inspired by the peaceful stillness of winter, On Frozen Pond carries a personal sense of place and childhood memory. As a little girl growing up in Newfoundland, I learned to ice skate outdoors on “the frozen bay,” and I fondly remember my father’s love of salmon fishing on the Terra Nova River in Newfoundland.
The swirling movement within the painting was inspired by those memories and, if you look closely with imagination, you may even notice the subtle suggestion of a man in a boat — a quiet tribute to my dad.
Transparent watercolor washes were layered gradually, allowing soft blues, muted shadows, and flowing pigment to create an atmosphere of quiet reflection across the frozen pond and surrounding trees. Loose edges and softened forms help convey the feeling of cold air, stillness, and those hushed winter moments where the landscape feels both expressive and deeply calm.
